Corn ethanol can achieve net-zero carbon emissions

Following a pledge by members of the RFA Renewable Fuels Association to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, on average by 2050, a new report shows that with the right policy and investment signals in place, it is possible to reach that objective even sooner. “Looking at the US ethanol industry it seems to be halfway down the road to net-zero emissions as today’s corn ethanol already cuts greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by about 50 percent compared with gasoline”, says Geoff Cooper, CEO and President of the Renewable Fuels Association.
The new report, Pathway to Net-Zero Ethanol was prepared by lifecycle analysis expert Emery, Ph.D., of informed Sustainability Consulting LLC. It identifies five distinct pathways to net-zero corn ethanol by 2050, based on a set of 28 emissions reduction actions that were considered.
